CURRENT SERIES: Living as Kingdom Citizens: Lessons from the Sermon on the Mount
January 17:The Road to Blessedness: The Beatitudes pt. 1– 5:3-5
Commonly referred to as the “Beatitudes,” this passage
speaks of eight blessings promised to those who are citizens of God’s kingdom
and eight characteristics of those who belong to God. This sermon will explore
the first three of these beatitudes, the characteristics that mark the lives of true believers and the blessings
that accompany them.
January 24:The Blessed Pursuit
of God and His Purposes
: The Beatitudes pt. 2 -- 5:6-9
Continuing with the next set of three blessings, Jesus speaks of the blessedness of those who live as kingdom citizens. These three beatitudes focus on the characteristics present in the life of believers.
January 31: Kingdom living in the Present World: The Beatitudes pt. 3 -- 5:10-12
In this final set of three blessings, Jesus speaks of the blessedness
of those who live out their kingdom purpose in the present world. These three beatitudes focus on
the characteristics present as believers glorify God and make His Son known in the present world.
February 7: The Present Mission for Kingdom Citizens –
5:13-16
The bible presents the kingdom of heaven as both already
established and not yet consummated. In one sense, the kingdom of heaven is at
hand and Christians are already living as citizens of the kingdom. In another
sense, we await the return of Christ, when all the kingdom of God will be
established in all its glory. What is the role of Kingdom Citizens during this “already/not
yet” era? This sermon will examine Christ’s call for believers to be “salt” and
“light” in the world.
February 14:Our Standing as Kingdom Citizens -- 5:17-20
In this passage, Jesus speaks of the “law and the prophets”
which he came to fulfill. How does our standing before God relate to this law
and what did Jesus mean about those who would be considered “least” and “great”
in the kingdom of heaven? This sermon will explore how the kingdom of heaven
relates to the Old Testament and our standing before God.
February 21: Our Standard as Kingdom Citizens -- 5:20-48
Jesus gives a number of teachings all with the introduction “you’ve
heard it has been said … but I say to you.” The religious teachers of Jesus’
day had presented the worship of Yahweh as the precise keeping of rules and
regulations. Jesus expanded the letter of the law to include matters of the
heart as well. In the end, Jesus summarizes God’s standard: “Be perfect, as
your heavenly Father is perfect.” This sermon will explore Jesus’ teaching
about the law and the standard God has set for kingdom citizens. Can anyone
live up to it?
